A Moving-Day Packing Timeline That Keeps the Last Week Under Control

Know what to pack four weeks, one week, and one day before your move so essentials stay accessible and the crew can work efficiently.

A smooth move starts by packing low-use items four weeks out, most remaining rooms during the final week, and a clearly labeled essentials kit the day before. The goal is not simply to fill boxes. It is to make the home safe and efficient for the moving crew while keeping medications, documents, chargers, clothing, and basic supplies within reach.

Four weeks before: reduce what has to move

Start with storage areas, seasonal items, books, decorations, guest rooms, and anything you will not need before closing day. This is also the best time to donate, sell, or dispose of items that should not take up truck space. Measure large furniture and confirm that it can leave the current home and enter the new one.

Create a simple labeling system before the first box is sealed. Write the destination room on the top and at least two sides. Add a short contents note and mark fragile boxes clearly. Consistent labels let movers place boxes once instead of stacking everything in a central room.

Two weeks before: pack by complete zones

Work through one room or zone at a time. Pack wall decor, extra linens, serving pieces, small appliances, hobby supplies, and secondary bathrooms. Keep hardware from disassembled furniture in labeled bags taped securely to the item or stored together in a clearly marked parts box.

Confirm what the moving company can and cannot transport. Set aside fuel, propane, paint, chemicals, perishable food, valuables, and other restricted or personally transported items instead of discovering them beside the truck.

One week before: leave only daily essentials

Pack most clothing, cookware, pantry goods, toys, office supplies, and bathroom storage. Prepare a small set of dishes, towels, toiletries, and clothing for the final days. Back up computers, photograph valuable electronics before disconnecting them, and label cords by device.

Use smaller boxes for books and dense items. Use larger boxes for light bedding, pillows, and lampshades. An oversized box filled with heavy material is harder to carry safely and more likely to fail at the bottom.

The day before: build an essentials kit

Pack a bag or clearly colored tote that stays with you. Include identification, closing and lease documents, medication, keys, phone chargers, a change of clothes, toiletries, pet supplies, snacks, water, basic tools, paper products, and cleaning supplies. If children are moving with you, add the items that make bedtime familiar.

Finish packing before the crew arrives. Clear walkways, remove loose items from stairs, reserve parking for the truck, and protect any area the movers should not enter. Empty and defrost appliances when required, and keep pets safely contained away from open doors.

Moving morning: do one final walkthrough

Point out fragile items, furniture that needs disassembly, boxes that travel with you, and anything staying behind. Before the truck leaves, check closets, cabinets, attics, garages, sheds, and outdoor storage. At the new home, confirm room labels with the crew so boxes and furniture land where they belong.

The short version

Pack early, label by destination, keep heavy boxes small, separate restricted items, and protect one essentials kit from going onto the truck.
