How to Prepare Furniture Before the Movers Arrive

A room-by-room furniture prep checklist that protects finishes, shortens loading time, and keeps moving day safer.

Prepare furniture for movers by emptying unstable contents, securing removable parts, photographing electronics, measuring tight openings, and clearing a safe path from every room to the truck. A little work before arrival protects the home and gives the crew more time for careful loading.

Empty what can shift or add unnecessary weight

Remove fragile, loose, or heavy items from desks, cabinets, nightstands, and entertainment centers. Pack those contents in labeled boxes. Lightweight linens may stay in a sturdy dresser only if your mover approves; overfilled drawers can rack the frame or slide open during handling.

Secure doors, shelves, and hardware

Take out adjustable shelves and wrap them together. Put screws, pins, and mounting hardware in labeled bags. Avoid placing strong tape directly on finished wood, leather, or painted surfaces. Let the crew use pads, stretch wrap, and other protection suited to the material.

Photograph electronics before disconnecting them

Take a clear photo of the cable connections behind televisions, computers, and audio equipment. Label each cord, remove batteries when appropriate, and pack remotes with the matching device. Keep personal data backups, laptops, and irreplaceable media with you.

Measure the route, not only the furniture

Measure the item and the narrowest doorway, stair turn, elevator, or hallway along its route. Tell the moving company about unusually large pieces before moving day. The crew can plan disassembly, equipment, parking, and staffing instead of solving the problem at the door.

Clear a safe working path

Remove rugs, pet gates, plants, toys, and small decor from walkways. Reserve space near the entrance and keep children and pets away from open doors. Point out weak steps, low ceilings, loose railings, or surfaces that need extra protection.

Identify special-care and do-not-move items

Make a written list of antiques, glass tops, artwork, safes, adjustable beds, exercise equipment, and assembled furniture with hidden fasteners. Set aside medications, documents, jewelry, keys, chargers, and the essentials bag that travels with you.
